Errol M Hornstein BSc(Hons) FBC Optom.DCLP (qualified 1976)

I was born and raised in Glasgow and studied Ophthalmic Optics (now Optometry) at the Glasgow Caledonian University. Graduating in 1975 I went to work with my father for my preregistration year.

I worked between our practices in Cathcart Rd, Mount Florida, Glasgow and upstairs at 79 Quarry street Hamilton – a large flat split into two units.

I always had a wish to move to a shop at ground level and was able to realise this dream when we relocated to our new shop at 77a Quarry Street.

I have a specialist qualification in contact lens fitting and am particularly interested in how the eyes and vision are affected by Cataract, Diabetes and age related conditions. The gift of sight is a very precious one. I feel very privileged to have been able to protect, maintain and often improve our patients vision over a long and rewarding career.

My main interests away from work have and continue to be sport and travel. After playing football for many years I became a referee, where my own eyesight was always doubted! I ended my career as a specialist linesman for five seasons at premier league matches, equally unpopular with both Rangers and Celtic supporters. I also travelled to Vienna for a European cup tie and Azarbaijan for an International match. I now enjoy tennis and swimming, although not at the same time.

Waseem Afzal BSc(Hons) MCOptom (qualified 2009)

I was born and raised in Glasgow and, after a lot of deliberation, I decided that the career for me was to be an Optometrist. I took up a place at Glasgow Caledonian University to study Optometry in 2004. Whilst studying I worked part time in a number of practices and gained huge experience in all aspects of Optics, from reception work to dispensing to running my own machine making glasses!

I graduated in 2008 and subsequently spent just under two years working in Inverness, where I completed my Professional Qualification Exams in 2009 and continued to work in the same practice for another year. I worked for 6 months carrying out home eye examinations for those who were housebound, covering all of Scotland. Following this I worked in a variety of practices from small independent practices to national chains.

My main interests at work are Dry Eye and ocular disease. I find the work I do very rewarding and always strive to provide the best care and attention to all patients. I particularly enjoy educating patients on how the eye works and how to protect and preserve sight.

I joined the team at Hornstein’s in June 2016 and I have enjoyed the personal touch and attention at Hornstein’s which is missing at a lot of practices I’ve worked in the past.

Away from work, I enjoy cycling, when we get the weather! I’ve played football from an early age and still try to play whenever I can.
